NJHS
The National Junior Honor Society Chapter of Saint Edmond’s Academy is a duly chartered and affiliated chapter of this prestigious national organization. Membership is open to those students who meet the required standards / pillars in five areas of evaluation: scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. Students are selected for membership by majority vote of a five-member principal-appointed faculty council, which bestows this honor upon qualified students on behalf of the faculty of our school each year.
Scholarship A Saint Edmond’s Academy student must have a minimum average of 93% for each trimester. This sentence is listed in the SEA Chapter Bylaws.
Service This involves voluntary contributions made by a student and done without compensation. The service standard / pillar for NJHS will be fulfilled by volunteering as a NJHS group at a local organization. More details will follow.
Leadership Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, and idea contributors. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others.
Character The student of good character is cooperative; demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability; shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others. A chapter’s faculty council may review or consider disciplinary records when evaluating this criterion.
Citizenship In general, the student who demonstrates citizenship understands the importance of civic engagement; has a high regard for freedom and justice; and respects democracy.
Students in grades 7 and 8 are eligible for membership. For the scholarship criterion, a student must have an overall average for each trimester of 93%. Each year those students who meet this criterion are invited to complete a Candidate Information Form that provides the faculty council with information regarding the candidate and how the candidate fulfills the additional 4 standards / pillars for membership.
All Candidate Forms are carefully reviewed by the faculty council to determine membership. A majority vote of the council is necessary for selection. Candidates are notified regarding selection or non-selection in a timely manner.
Following notification, a formal induction ceremony is held at the school to recognize all the newly selected members. Once inducted, new members are required to maintain the same level of performance that led to their selection.
