Dear St. Edmond’s Families,
I follow the Dalai Lama on Twitter and shared his recent tweet with the Faculty and Staff Thursday morning: “what we need is a calm mind and warm-heartedness…that’s how we make ourselves happy as individuals in families, local communities, and nations. If we can train those who are young today in these qualities, we’ll create a happier world.” The essence of that idea is grounded in our Holy Cross mission: hearts and minds, educating boys of character. It’s good to remind ourselves of this.
In working with my colleagues here, I am struck by their dedication and vision and energy. One “old schooler” is Ms. Dehart, whose enthusiasm and devotion to the SEA community speak to our mission, no question. One specific event I wanted to emphasize is the musical revue and upcoming fundraiser, All Together Now, that she has been directing during the week and on weekends. The November 12-13 performances will feature current students, alumni, parents of alumni, former teachers, administrators, Brother Thomas Meany, and our Ladies from current and past productions. Tickets will go on sale next week. If you would like to advertise your business, send a note of encouragement to the cast, or make a “Theater Angel” donor to the program, you can access the link here. We are so excited for this upcoming family event.
A shout-out to Mrs. Rottura and Mr. Cincotta for hosting our High School Information Night this past Tuesday in the Rollins Center. Twenty-three St. Ed’s families attended as representatives from Brandywine School District Choice, St. Elizabeth High School, St. Mark’s High School, Archmere Academy, and Salesianum School made presentations in four different sessions. As a former high school admissions director, I counseled the 8th graders to ask questions and be sure to shadow at their schools of interest. As parents, we have many excellent options and it is good for the boys to experience firsthand the cultures of their schools of interest.
Sports this weekend
- The Cross Country Teams will compete Saturday at Brandywine Creek State Park; 1st race is 9:00 a.m.
- Varsity Soccer – plays Saturday (11:30 a.m.) at Van Buren v. St. John the Beloved
- JV Soccer – plays Saturday (10:00 a.m.) at Mt. Pleasant Elementary v St. Ann’s
- 3rd/4th Grade Soccer – plays tonight (6:00 p.m.) at IHM v. SMM
Starting this week, we will have a “test run” by offering a Chick-fil-A option on Wednesdays and Thursdays for those eating in the SEA cafeteria, this Wednesday/Thursday, October 20th and 21st. Grades 1, 3, 5, and 7 can order for Wednesday and Grades EC, 4, 6, and 8 can order for Thursday. All orders need to be placed by 10 p.m. Sunday night. Please see the banner below for more details. I am grateful for Mrs. Rottura spearheading this effort and for your patience as we look to offer and expand food options in the school.
Finally, we are a Mile Marker Sponsor at the Beau Biden Foundation 5K Run/Walk/Wheel for Child Protection Saturday, November 13th, at Rockford Park. I hope to participate with my sister from the Mary Campbell Center in support of this important cause. We have several extra registration bibs due to our sponsorship; please let me know if you would like one. It should be a great event.
I hope your weekend is calm and warm-hearted.
