From the Head of School 10.08.2021

Dear St. Edmond’s Families,

Wednesday night, Bishop Malooly and St. Ed’s Lancer and Board member Michael Hare ‘75 were honored at the Catholic Charities Annual Tribute Dinner for their lifetime commitment to the Wilmington community’s most vulnerable families. Mike has been a devoted alumnus, and it was most appropriate that our Academy Singers helped usher in the evening by singing the National Anthem with the Archmere Academy Mastersingers. Mike’s commitment to Catholic education has made our Lancer community stronger over the past five decades. No words really, simply gratitude for the grace and love of the Hare family.

Our High School Information Night will be this Tuesday, October 12th, beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the Rollins Center and will run until 8:00 p.m. Representatives from Brandywine School District Choice, St. Elizabeth High School, St. Mark’s High School, Archmere Academy, and Salesianum School will be in attendance to make presentations. 7th and 8th Grade families can RSVP here.

We held our first SEA Board meeting this past Tuesday night. As always, I am grateful for the support and insight of our Board members –past and current parents, local educators and community leaders, and alumni– who continue to support this Holy Cross community. I spoke briefly to the Board concerning our Annual Fund program and approach. This year we will have several segmented committees –Young Alumni, Alumni, Current Parent, Past Parent– that will help us reach out to our constituents and tell the St. Ed’s story. Again, I am grateful for the support as we look to raise funds and strengthen the SEA community.

I am thankful for your patience as we manage the COVID challenges and try to return to our normal school routines. We suspended food service in the cafeteria to start the year, but have been entertaining other options as we move into the academic year. We are offering a Chick-fil-A option on Wednesdays and Thursdays for those eating in the SEA cafeteria, beginning Wednesday/Thursday, October 20th and 21st. Grades 1, 3, 5, and 7 can order for Wednesday and Grades EC, 4, 6, and 8 can order for Thursdays. All orders need to be placed by 10 p.m. Sunday night. Please see the banner below for more details. I am grateful for Mrs. Pileggi and Mrs. Smith in getting this program up and running.

Fall Break is here as we have a three-day weekend in front of us. There are no athletic competitions this weekend and we will not hold classes on Monday. This time last year we were in the midst of a COVID hiatus, holding two weeks of classes online as we managed the virus spread. We are in much better shape this year, yes? Thank you for your help and patience this year as we continue to be in school and adhere to our safety protocols.

Finally, a teacher sent me St. Patrick’s Prayer this week, a small gesture of support and encouragement. A snippet:

Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me…
I arise today through the mighty strength
Of the Lord of creation.

I hope the three-day weekend gives you and your boys a sense of God’s pervasive spirit, always with us, always present, in what we say and in what we do. Enjoy our fall break.

Warm regards,

John
